Description

Series Overview:

Research in civics education refers to instructional strategies that promote democratic ways of thinking that foster informed and active citizenship. It also establishes that citizenship education should be student-centered with a strong emphasis on classroom discussion and cooperative activities.

One model that increases student engagement while requiring student interactions with relevant issues is Problem Based Learning (PBL). The LAC will engage the field in a three-part series that will introduce participants to the PBL approach to develop relevant civics curricula.

In this three-part EL Civics series we will look at real issues our students face and develop toolsfor self-advocacy. Throughout the series, we will include lesson ideas that can be used withstudents at varying levels of proficiency. We will also explore how specific technology tools can be integrated into EL Civics instruction.

Session 1 (face to face) April 27, 2018, 10 am to 4 pm
During the first session of this series, participants will collectively determine common topics in order to identify social-economic, racial and environmental issues that will provide students with an opportunity to engage in powerful civics education. Participants then will participate in a Webquest to locate information about city and state government and will develop a Google Forms survey to use with their students.

Session 2 (webinar) May 18, 2018, 1 pm to 2:30 pm
In the second session of the series participants will share what they learned from their surveys and an outline of a project that will incorporate PBL essential elements and student civic action.

Session 3 (face to face) June 1, 2018, 10 am to 1 pm
In the last session teachers will share what they have learned through their projects. Participants will also review two to three social media tools and how they can be used for advocacy. Projects from this series will be up-loaded in our digital resource center.
